Local Hospital Pioneering Heart Procedure

Updated: Monday, November 25 2013, 05:01 PM EST
CINCINNATI (Angela Ingram) -- With precision Doctor Dean Kereiakes uses his skill to improve the quality of people's lives.

Now the doctor and a team of medical professionals at Christ Hospital are pioneering a procedure called "Transaortic Valve Replacement."

The doctor can help patients' hearts without surgery; instead he uses a catheter.

"As we're pacing the heart at 160 to 180 beats per minute, we blow up a balloon to literally crack the valve and then we're going to take that balloon out and the next thing you'll see is that we're putting the valve in."

It's used to help people who suffer from severe aortic stenosis; that means the aortic valve doesn't allow normal blood flow.  Patients suffer from chest pain, fatigue, and shortness of breath.

Doctor Kereiakes, who was Dusty Baker's cardiologist, worked to bring cutting-edge heart procedures here to Cincinnati.

"You don't have to go to Cleveland.  You don't have to go to Rochester, MN, or Los Angeles, or Houston; you can come here and get access to these technologies."

Recently, Christ Hospital was chosen as one of only 20 sites in the country to enroll patients for the newest version of the valve.  Doctor Kereiakes says the hospital's technology offers patients minimally invasive procedures with a shorter recovery time.

He's hoping people in the greater Cincinnati area suffering from heart problems will take advantage of what the hospital can offer.

"I remember when we did a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement on a 97-year-old WWII veteran and some people actually asked me why would you replace an aortic valve on a 97-year-old and I said, 'You gotta go talk to this guy.'  I mean he was just a remarkable human being writing his memoirs in his 90's."

"What we're able to do is take people who otherwise for whom there may not be another treatment or have been turned down by others and we're able to still help those people."
