Mayor-Elect Nominates Permanent City Manager

Updated: Wednesday, November 27 2013, 09:36 PM EST
CINCINNATI (Jeff Hirsh) -- The next Cincinnati City Manager, permanent not interim, will be the current director of the city's park system.

Mayor-elect John Cranley Wednesday nominated Willie Carden, a life-long resident of Cincinnati, to replace Milton Dohoney.

The new council still needs to approve Carden, but that's expected to be a formality.  Cranley made the announcement Wednesday afternoon at Krohn Conservatory, one of the places Carden supervised.

Local 12 News reporter Jeff Hirsh was there and has more on the selection.

Willie Carden started 27 years ago with the city's sanitation department and rose thru the ranks.  He ultimately supervised that department, then riverfront stadium, and for the past 13 years, has served as the parks director.

The 53-year-old Carden will make 235,000 dollars a year, 20,000 less than his predecessor.

Mayor-elect Cranley praised Carden as an operations guy who can make things work and a dynamic leader who can connect with everyone from top business leaders to the average citizen.

Cranley was asked why no national search?

That was my original intention, but as I got to know Willie and we had more conversations it became obvious that he was the right guy for the job. I plan to hit the ground running and I need someone who is ready to run with me.

Carden was asked, Will you be willing to go to the mayor and say this is a bad idea?

He responded, No.  I will give information and say what do you want to do?  Their job is to make policy and mine is to run the city and that's what Ill do.

City Council holds a public hearing Tuesday morning on Cranley's choice as the next city manager. A vote is expected on Wednesday, and approval- unanimous approval- is likely.

Willie Carden will not receive any severance if he is let go as manager; however, he will be guaranteed a pension for 30 years of service. He has 27-years now.
