Mother Indicted for Reckless Homicide after Baby Drowns

Updated: Tuesday, December 3 2013, 11:09 AM EST
NEWPORT, Ky. (Joe Webb) -- Nearly three months after her baby drowned in a bathtub, a local mother now faces charges.

A grand jury in Campbell County has indicted Amanda Mckenzie on reckless homicide and being a persistent felony offender.

Five-month-old Liam Mckenzie died last August after his mother reportedly fell asleep while the two were in the tub. Local 12 News reporter Joe Webb has been following the story since it broke and has the details you'll only see here on Local 12 News.

Neighbors say Amanda Mckenzie moved out of her Newport apartment shortly after her five-month-old son Liam drowned last summer.  Gone are the trappings of the makeshift memorial that was here august 21st.

That morning, neighbors say a woman who lived with Mckenzie made the 9-1-1 call.

What's the problem?  Her mom has the baby in the tub with her and she fell asleep and she doesn't know what time it was.  And he's blue!

Liam Mckenzie was taken to Children's Hospital in Cincinnati where he died.  Neighbors said Mckenzie was a caring mother and were shocked.

No one was charged at the time of the baby's death but Amanda Mckenzie submitted a blood test to Newport police.  The results came back in the last weeks and were presented to the grand jury.  That's what led to the reckless homicide charge.

The indictment also charges Mckenzie with being a persistent felony offender. Her criminal past is illustrated by 13 mug shots on file at the Campbell County Jail: five convictions for disorderly conduct, three for assault and two for resisting arrest.

In 2008 she got 5 years probation after fighting with Fort Thomas police and kicking windows out of a cruiser.  Her probation was revoked in 2009 after she ran away from treatment.  The judge sent her back to jail, citing her addiction to alcohol, prescription drugs and use of heroin and cocaine.

The reckless homicide charge carries a penalty of one to five years in prison.

Amanda Mckenzie was arrested by Newport police late Monday afternoon. She is being held on a 25,000 dollar bond.
