Students Protest Lack of Diversity at UC

Updated: Friday, November 15 2013, 12:29 PM EST
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- A group of students at the University of Cincinnati gather to voice their concerns about race relations and potential insensitivity within the university. Local 12 reporter Jeff Hirsh has the story.

A few dozen African American students protested Friday morning about what they call a lack of sensitivity and a lack of numbers. The protest was precipitated by the resignation of the African American Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. There is also the issue of insensitivity. For example, a cartoon as perceived as racist and insulting made its way around campus.

In addition, fewer than 10 percent of UC's students are black.

There seemed to be factions between the protesters. One was a little confrontational about the issues. The other is willing to make things better. Student Amara Agomuo says, "what we're channeling is this is UC coalition, and we stand with UC. This is not an attack on Ono, this is not an attack on anybody, it's bringing into light attention so other universities can see what we're doing and follow in behind."

The group will meet with university officials to implement some goals. UC does have a diversity plan which was adopted a few years ago. The interim diversity officer says officials will meet with students to come up with more aggressive ways to meet diversity goals
