Updated: Monday, November 25 2013, 10:21 AM EST
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Police in central Ohio say they fatally shot a man who earlier is believed to have shot a woman in a dental chair and a child at another location.

Police spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said a SWAT officer was wounded in the exchange of gunfire in a Wal-Mart parking lot in northeast Columbus near a mall Friday morning. The officer was shot in the hip and was in stable condition.

Weiner said the child, the son of the suspect's ex-girlfriend, was shot in the face at a home in Grove City on the southwest side of Columbus. The woman was shot at a dentist's office in Groveport, a suburb on the city's southeast side.

Both were in critical condition Friday afternoon.

The shooter was identified as 47-year-old Danny Thornton.
