Suspect Steals Boone Co. Deputy's Cruiser and Shotgun

Updated: Tuesday, December 3 2013, 11:11 AM EST
BOONE COUNTY, Ky. (Rich Jaffe) --  The hunt for the man who stole a
Boone County sheriff deputy's SUV is over. It started at about 3 a.m.
Monday morning when deputies placed Joshua Grizzell in the back of the
SUV as part of an investigation. It ended later in the morning, when
Grizzell shot himself at a culvert near Maher Road and Dixie Highway

The
investigation started with a broken down vehicle on southbound I-75.
Grizzell and another man ended up walking in the northbound lanes. When
deputies started to question them, they put each man into a sheriff's
vehicle. At some point, investigators say Grizzell managed to work
himself into the driver's seat of the deputy's SUV. He took off on
northbound I-75.

Deputies found the vehicle abandoned in an
industrial park, the deputy's shotgun was missing. Investigators say
Grizzell was later spotted kicking in the back door of a home. The
homeowner fired a shot, possibly as a warning. They say Grizzell ran
off. They spotted him going through neighbors' yards.

Deputies
surrounded Grizzell. They told him to surrender. They say he refused to.
Grizzell then shot himself in the chest with the shotgun.

A
medical helicopter rushed him to the hospital. No word on his condition.
Investigators say they're not sure what either man were doing on the
highway, or how Grizzell was able to take off in the deputy's SUV.
