Wait Almost Over for Parents Camping at Magnet Schools

Updated: Wednesday, November 20 2013, 12:26 AM EST
CINCINNATI (Perry Schaible) -- Camping ends today for parents waiting in line to enroll their children at popular Cincinnati magnet schools. Perry Schaible reports from Fairview-Clifton German Language School.

Parents will be allowed in the school in Clifton at 11 p.m. Tuesday night. Enrollment then begins at midnight. Parents have waited outside that school and Sands Montessori in Mt. Washington through freezing temperatures and severe storms in an effort to provide their kids with this unique educational experience.

At Fairview-Clifton, there are 42 people waiting for 35 open spots. The other spots were given during a lottery and to siblings of current students. The controversial process has many question whether the first come, first served system of enrollment is the best method. However, Fairview-Clifton principal Karen Mulligan says some like it. "There is a contingent of people who like the camping.  It's like a badge of honor.  They're bonding out there, they're playing cornhole, they get to know each other, and then throughout all their years at Fairview they still have that bond."

Many of the parents have had help from friends, family and grandparents, who take their place in line for a while.
