Can Supplement Help Low Libido in Women Who Take Birth Control

Updated: Monday, October 28 2013, 08:44 AM EDT
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- If you are struggling with side effects from birth control pills, researchers at UC Reproductive Medicine Research Center may be able to help.

They are testing a simple supplement that might reduce a common complaint for many women. Medical reporter Liz Bonis explains in today's Medical Edge.

If you noticed a drop in sexual desire a short time after you started taking oral contraceptive pills, you are likely not alone.

Doctor Julie Sroga says it's a common complication for many women, which is why she is part of a team testing a common supplement that might help lift libido
called DHEA. Dr. Sroga says "what the thought of DHEA is that it may increase testosterone levels, or estrogen levels that might improve sexual function."

DHEA is a hormone naturally made by the body and the National Institutes of Health says it can also be made in the laboratory from chemicals found in wild yam and soy. In Sroga's study, "we are looking at  women that have been on birth control for at least three months that are complaining of sexual dysfunction that  really started as a result of their birth control pills."

The goal is to find out if this additional supplement might make a difference for those on birth control in easing some of these symptoms. It will be compared in the trial to a placebo or sugar pill. The supplement is taken in addition the birth control pills right now and if it's established that it works Dr. Sroga says "potentially we could combine it in a birth control pill."

It's being studied in healthy women, ages 18 to 40 who have taken oral contraceptives for at least a couple of months.  If you would like more information on this study you can call 513-584-4100 or click here.

There is no cost to participate and if you qualify you are paid for time and travel.
