Couple Diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer at the Same Time

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- A local mother and wife is saying a special thank you this Thanksgiving week to a team at the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute. She reminds all of us that every day is a gift and medical reporter Liz Bonis explains why in our Medical Edge.

For more than two decades, Cheryl Edmonds and husband George shared life, love and family and two beautiful dogs.

Late last year, they also shared a trip to the doctor's office for follow-up testing, which led to something rarely heard of in medical history. "We both eventually went and got a CT scan together, and his doctor called and told him over the phone and told him he had pancreatic cancer, and then a couple days later called me and had me come into the office, and told me I had pancreatic cancer."

Immediately they were referred to Dr. Olugbenga Olowokure. "It's unbelievable, I have never ever encountered a situation where two people, married, not genetically related, present with a disease at that disease at the same time."

Cheryl and George spent about four hours initially with Dr. Olowokure's team. "After he talked to us and told us everything that we would be going through he prayed with us, and that was amazing. How many doctors do that, not very many."

About three months later however, George went home to be with the Lord. This Thanksgiving, she reminds all of us, "just count each and every day as a blessing, because life isn't guaranteed, you know?"

Every day should be Thanksgiving.
