May We Help Organization Helps Man Paint With Mouth

Updated: Wednesday, November 6 2013, 09:54 AM EST
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- You're invited to attend a special event this week which raises money for volunteer engineers making a big difference in the lives of others. It is called  May We Help. Medical reporter Liz Bonis explains what they do in today's Medical Edge.

When Ron Flowers, who has cerebral palsy, wants to speak he uses an extender on a mouthpiece with this computerized voice box.

He uses the same kind of extender to paint which is his real passion. Katie Brenner from United Cerebral Palsy says, "he's done really, really, small things, he's done some huge things, he paints faces of Tom Jones, his favorite singer, and Beyonce, but he also does landscapes and abstracts."

But as Brenner points out painters like to swap brushes while painting and that was a tough thing for Ron to do by himself. So she put out the call for help to a  group of volunteer engineers called May We Help, "the project was to create painting equipment so Ron could paint."

Ed Barrett and volunteer Benjamin Goldschneider built a device to hold paint brushes, so Ron can swap them while painting. "We are still kind of figuring out the last design details, but is seems to be working all right."

Part of the reason however that this team of volunteers is so passionate with finishing this project, has to do with the volunteer engineer who started this project. His name is Bill Wood and they lost him to cancer a few years ago. Bills passion helped launch May We Help and
Ron's paint project.

The event that supports May We Help is Thursday night November 7th at the Hilton Netherland Plaza. Liz Bonis is the emcee and you can still get tickets and information. Click here.May We Help Organization Helps Man Paint With Mouth
