Medical Edge: Designated Drivers

Updated: Friday, September 20 2013, 09:41 PM EDT
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- From Octoberfest Zinzinnati to the Bengals game on Sunday it's a big weekend for celebrations!

If your celebration involves alcohol a word of caution today from researchers who've just released a new study on “designated drivers.”

If you've seen the YouTube video of a 22 year old man who talks about the tragedy of drinking and driving you know hanging out and drinking with friends if you overdo it and the drive home can have sobering results.

So your logical thought is then we'll just have a designated driver.  Good idea, except a new report says that with designated drivers, there is a good chance that person may actually be impaired.

Kelly Farrish of the Farrish Law Firm specializes in defending those who have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

As you might imagine, celebration weekends often keep his firm busy.  He says, “I take calls 24/7 and needless to say when there is more drinking, there are more calls.”

We shared details of this new report, it comes from a study released by the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.

Researchers measured the breath alcohol levels of more than a thousand people exiting a bar on a Friday night.

165 of them identified themselves as designated drivers.  Four out of ten had had at least one alcoholic drink based on their breath test and of those, one in five had taken in so much alcohol they were considered impaired.

The authors of the study say designated drivers should abstain completely from alcohol, Farrish doesn't disagree.

What, and how much, because as the designated driver, others are depending on you.
