"All Clear" given at Ohio University after possible shooting at residence hall

Updated: Wednesday, July 16 2014, 02:13 AM EDT
ATHENS, Ohio (WKRC) -- Ohio University Police gave the "all clear" after they investigated the report of a shooting at Gamertsfelder residence hall at Ohio University in Athens Tuesday.

A short time after 4:15, the university's official Twitter account indicated police found no evidence of a shooting inside the residence hall and were expanding their search to the "East Green".  A search of the building and several others turned up no evidence of a shooting.

While school officials said the university was not on lockdown, reports indicated East Green -- where Gamertsfelder Hall is located -- was evacuated and people were urged to avoid the area.

Police said alerts and text messages went out to students and faculty.  Students were allowed to return to their dorms late Tuesday afternoon.

Gamertsfelder Hall is a four-floor building with more than 150 rooms, housing co-ed, first-year and upperclassmen.  The residence hall houses ROTC students in the fall and spring but, not summer.  According to former students, Gamertsfelder Hall is often used to house incoming freshmen who are attending orientation during the summer months.

No injuries were reported.
