Butler Co. firefighter loses home to fire

Updated: Tuesday, July 15 2014, 05:52 PM EDT
DARRTOWN, Ohio (Larry Davis) -- Fire breaks out in the home of a Butler County firefighter and quickly spreads.

The fire started Tuesday morning in a camper in Darrtown. Crews initially feared that they lost one of their own.

Fire destroyed the camper, spread to a second camper as well as a truck. It nearly spread to a large garage.

Milford Township volunteer firefighter Steve Smith-a 40 year veteran-lived inside that camper. Firefighters feared he was still inside the camper, because the truck he normally drives was still on his property.

Turns out, Smith drove another truck and was away at work. "Oh my God I hope he's not in there," thought Milford Township fire chief Corby Hansel. "I knew the situation and I hoped he wasn't in there. I knew he should have been at work but they kept saying he might be in there, he might be in there."

So far, there's no word yet what may have started that fire.
