Father, son accused of leaving after Middletown woman's overdose death appear in court
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKRC) - The father and son accused of leaving a woman after she overdosed on heroin and died with her nine children in the home, appeared in court Monday. Jim and Keith Boyer were charged with abuse of a corpse, nine counts of child endangering, tampering with evidence and petty theft.
Jamita Sanders died on December 13. At some point, the Boyers were also both unresponsive but they woke up after taking pills, drinking alcohol and taking heroin, according to an assistant prosecutor in court. A "loaded" needle was left in reach of the children, she said.
Investigators believe the Boyers then stole Sanders' money and took items out of her purse. They argued with some of her children after they saw them take the money, according to the assistant prosecutor. That's when the Boyers allegedly told the children they were leaving to buy soda.
A judge ordered Keith Boyer, 32, held on $130,000 bond. His father Jim Boyer, 63, was locked up on $125,000 bond.
The children's ages range from 14 to one-years-old. Middletown Police were so moved by the loss of this mother so close to Christmas, and the father's struggle to make ends meet, that they put out a call for donations. The community filled a room with clothing, toys and more. People also donated money.
