Auditor: Crook caught on camera trying to retrieve credit card skimmer

Police and auditor want to identify man who tried to retrieve a credit card skimmer in Fairfield (Butler Co. Auditor's Office)

BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (WKRC) - A man was recently caught on camera trying to retrieve a credit card skimmer found at a gas pump at a Fairfield gas station. Now police and the butler County Auditor wants to identify him.

When inspectors spotted the skimmer a few days before, they put a security camera inside the pump. Since the skimmer was spotted and removed, no credit card information was stolen at the gas station.

Butler County Auditor Roger Reynolds said two skimmers were found last month, bringing the total to 15 that have been found by Butler County inspectors since November of 2015.

Because this has been such a problem in Butler County, Reynolds has had additional inspectors making weekly checks of every gas pump in the county. That's about 100 service stations.

Reynolds has called on owners and gas managers to use security video, changing out looks when needed and having employees look at the pumps when they change out receipt paper.

Skimmers added by crooks store customers' credit card information. Then, they sell the information or clone the credit cards. Reynolds suggests that when customers pay with a card, they avoid using their debit cards. The skimmers steal the PIN and the account number letting crooks right into a victim's checking account.

Hamilton County Auditor Dusty Rhodes said a skimmer was found on Glendale-Milford Road last month.
