Hoxworth Blood Centers put out urgent plea for blood donors
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Hoxworth Blood Centers have put out an urgent plea for Type O blood.
There have been a big drop in donors while the need has gone up.
While many people have responded to the request, Hoxworth said a few big traumas depleted their blood supply. They need to step up donations to avoid a critical shortage going into Memorial Day weekend.
"We really just want all types to come in as soon as possible," said Cara Nicolas, who works for Hoxworth Blood Center.
Hoxworth hosted a drive at Saint Elizabeth Healthcare in Fort Thomas, where providers know firsthand how critical blood and blood products can be for patient survival.
One donor, Stephanie Gilbert, said "I like being able to help people and I see the need."
Nicolas added, "We had some traumas last week, and several sickle cell transfusions over the weekend so the lower donation and increased usage has led to critical shortage. For those who need this blood there's a bit of a perfect storm. We're already down in supply going into the holiday weekend. There will be drives that won't be as plenty during that time. And then there's likely to be a greater need, that can happen over a holiday weekend."
More cars on the road during the holiday weekend is likely to lead to more trauma. The need, however, never stops.
"On the med surge level, we have a lot of patients that are battling cancer. So they need treatments for blood. We have emergency GI bleeds, so they need blood surgery."
If you donate this week you can get everything from dollar drafts at Rhinegeist to movie passes.
But even more than that, you'll get that good feeling like you are helping somebody.
Call 513-451-0910 if you can donate.
