Campbell Co. husband held on $1 million bond for wife's murder

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Ky. (WKRC) - A judge ordered a Campbell County man held on a one million dollar bond for killing his wife. John Allender was arraigned on a murder charge on April 20.

Cheryl Allender was shot to death at the couple's home on Mary Ingles highway in Mentor on April 18. John Allender told investigators Cheryl walked into his room with a gun. Witnesses told them she wouldn't have had a chance to grab a gun.

Neighbors said the couple was getting a divorce. John Allender had requested a protection order on the day of her death. He asked a judge to keep Cheryl away until her mental state could be determined. The judge denied the order.

John Allender's attorney, Rich Benenfant, asked for a few weeks until the next hearing to prepare a legal team. "Just a real tragic case. We'll do the best we can to find out all the facts and put it in front of the jury and see where it goes."

Allender will be back in court on June 1.

Cheryl Allender was a mother of six. Those who knew her say she was devoted to them.
