Cutting calories more important to vegan diet than cutting meat
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A warning to remember to eat your vegetables, if you choose to go vegan.
While several studies show that those who eat vegan diets -- which means no animal products such as fish, eggs, dairy or meat -- tend to be healthier and weigh less than those who do not, if you don't eat less food, it won't help you lose weight.
A spokesperson for The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics said vegans lose weight when they drop calories by cutting high fat food sources such as burgers and bacon, and add in low fruits and vegetables, not just because you give up meat.
But if you go vegan and still eat a lot of animal free products such as cookies and chips, you don't necessarily lose weight.
The same is true for any diet you follow, whether it's low-carb or low-fat or gluten free.
If you follow any of these plans carefully, you reduce calories significantly. That may be why you lose weight, not just the foods themselves.
There's also some thought that when you start eating better you want to exercise and do other healthy things. Good health habits are contagious, and that may make a difference too.
