Family sues Carlisle mortuary after bodies found covered with mold, maggots
CARLISLE, Ohio (WKRC) - A family is suing a mortuary in Carlisle after an investigation uncovered some major issues at the facility.
Bodies were left to rot, and maggots and mold covered faces.
Now, the family of Antwan Hurston is suing Premium Mortuary Services. Hurston died at the end of June, but several weeks went by and the family still had not received his cremated remains.
Investigators said they got a tip about the condition of the bodies and temporarily suspended the mortuary's license.
Even though the family got the urn Thursday, they're still unsure if it's their son.
"I was just hoping to God that my son wasn't there," said Antwan's mother, Sharon Hart. "And when I did find out--I'm devastated. I'm still kind of numb from it."
"Bodies of people that were cremated were mixed up, left on the floor and treated improperly," said attorney Richard Schulte.
The family said they just want to make sure something like this never happens again.
The Ohio Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors will make a decision about the future of Premium Mortuary Services at the next meeting Aug. 23.
