CINCINNATI (Cincinnati Business Courier) - Fifth Third Bancorp customers no longer need to have their debit card handy to withdraw cash from their accounts at an ATM.

The Cincinnati-based bank (Nasdaq: FITB) rolled out its cardless ATM service to all of its more than 2,500 ATMs in 10 states on March 1 following tests in Greater Cincinnati with its employees and then local customers.

Fifth Third chief digital officer Melissa Stevens said employees and test customers have been impressed with the new technology and customers have been discovering the option on their phones and using it even though an official launch announcement hasn’t been made.

To use the new technology, customers can log into their Fifth Third mobile banking app and select an account, then select the Cardless menu option and provide permission for the app to access the device’s camera. When the customer walks up to an ATM, he or she just taps the screen and a code will be provided. The phone’s camera can be used to scan the code, and the customer then enters his or her PIN to access all ATM functions.
