Kenton County sheriff pull school resource officers due to new DOJ rules

LATONIA, Ky. (WKRC) - The Kenton County Sheriff's Department will no longer provide school resource officers for the Covington schools.

Sheriff Chuck Korzenborn says he's doing that because he can't work with new rules put in place by the Department of Justice.

The DOJ put those new rules in effect after a video surfaced in 2014 showing an 8-year-old student in handcuffs around his biceps at Latonia Elementary.

Under the new rules, a resource officer can only intervene if there's "an immediate and substantial threat to physical safety or a serious crime."

The sheriff says those rules would mean "we could not do things my men are sworn to do."
