911 calls showcase chaos, terror after mother allegedly shoots 2 kids
DAYTON, Ohio (WKRC) - A mother shot her two young children in the head and dragged them into her front yard, police said Thursday.
Claudena Helton faces two counts of felonious assault for the shootings. Helton's neighbors said she was naked and had blood on her as she walked around in circles in her yard on Lori Sue Ave.
"I came outside and my neighbor said 'she shot the kids and she got a gun' or something to that effect," said one neighbor who did not want to be identified.
The neighbor said she told another neighbor to get a sheet and when Helton came out of the house she approached her in an effort to calm her.
"I take the sheet and I wrap the mom and I'm telling her at the same time it's ok, it's ok. She didn't resist," the neighbor said. "She was just zoned out if you ask me."
Helton's next door neighbor said witnesses told him Helton's 11-year-old daughter ran out of the house and to his front porch for help as her mother fired at her. The neighbors car was struck by at least three rounds. The girl was not hurt.
The crime prompted people who didn't even know the six-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl to bring balloons and a teddy bear to the house for them.
"It was just in my heart as a mother. I have three kids myself and these was young babies you know," said Lashawnda Jones.
Dayton Police said Helton has been charged with child endangering in the past. Neighbors say she was eccentric and kept to herself and they can't imagine what led her to shoot the children. The children were in critical condition at Dayton Children's Hospital Thursday.
Police believe Helton has some mental health issues. She's charged with two counts of felonious assault.
