Sheriff investigates murder-suicide in Columbia Township
COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - A man drove to his ex-wife's apartment and shot and killed her Wednesday morning before turning the gun on himself, according to sheriff's officials.
Residents of the Heritage Hill Apartments in the 8200 block of Wooster Pike said they heard gunshots at about 5:30 this morning. Sheriff's deputies said John Smith, 47, drove to the apartment complex where his ex-wife, Anna, was living. John confronted Anna as she was leaving for work and she ran into an apartment building to get away from him.
"I heard a gunshot outside and I ran outside. He chased her into the building, knocked her on the ground," said one man who called 911.
Sheriff's officials said John found Anna in the building and shot her several times before turning the gun on himself. Neighbors described to a 911 call taker what they saw.
"He's shooting at her! Oh lord, have mercy. Get out of the way, get out of the window," another caller said.
Court records show John Smith filed for divorce earlier this year. The couple had been married for 12 years and did not have any children.
The Smiths divorce decree was signed August 30 and their last court day was October 5. It's not clear what led John to confront Anna Wednesday morning.
Neighbor Courtney Hellebuyck had just moved into the complex. She was sleeping when the shots were fired.
"I just can't imagine. These are things that you don't ever expect to hear about especially not where you live," Hellebuyck said.
