Why does Rumpke pick up your trash so early?
COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - Why do Rumpke workers pick up your trash so early? It's the safest time for them to do so.
Rumpke officials say it's the number one question they get this time of year. According to company statistics there are close calls for employees everyday, so it's important that the Rumpke workers on are on the roads when commuters are not.
So far in 2017, four Rumpke workers have been hit by cars. In the past three years, the company has had 12 incidents. "They're in and out of the truck 400 times a day and each time they're out of that truck and they have cars pass them, a lot of times at high rates of speed with little caution, there is always a risk or potential for collision."
The goal is to hit the roads before most other drivers and when the summer heat is at its daytime low. While it may be an inconvenience, Rumpke officials say that's not their intention. "We do apologize for those early morning wake up calls, but at the end of the day, we are trying to get our employees home safely," said Molly Yeager.
Rumpke services commercial customers early but for a different reason. "We do have commercial drivers that start early and a lot of the reason for that is logistics," said Joshua McConnell, Rumpke driver training instructor. "They go into some areas where once business hours hit they can't get into with the size of the trucks. Limited access to parking lots and alleys, a lot of vehicles parked in there. It's hard to get a big truck in some of those places. "
Rumpke serves all of Ohio, most of Kentucky, Indiana, and a portion of West Virginia. Its corporate headquarters are in Colerain Township.
