Families host Marines away from home for Thanksgiving
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WKRC) - Marines in Camp Geiger in North Carolina volunteered for a special Thanksgiving celebration this year. Little did they know, they would be the one's treated to a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal.
"They told us after, that we were going to go out and have Thanksgiving with families who wanted to have a service member with them. And what's crazy is, I'm one of those."
The Marines, who couldn't be home with their families, got to spend their Thanksgiving with families in the Wilmington area, WWAY reports.
"Being in the military, we're away a lot. We've never met these people before but they welcome us in, and they treat us like one of their own."
The Marines say this experience has made them grateful for the support they receive.
"There's someone overseas, probably eating one of those MREs, who might not have their phone on them because they're not supposed to. And I was able to contact my family and even though I'm not home, I'm home with another family."
"They're just not feeding us, they're making us part of their family for the day. I just can't explain it. It's just awesome."
