Utah daycare worker arrested, admits to slamming child to floor, breaking both legs
KUTV) — A day care worker has been arrested on felony suspicion of child abuse by the Salt Lake Police Department according to court documents.
Elvira Ortega, 66, was taken into custody Monday.
According to a probable cause statement, the victim was taken to Primary Children’s Hospital on Feb. 23 and was diagnosed with two broken legs, below the knees.
Court documents said Ortega admitted to slamming the child down on the bathroom floor, feet first, fracturing both legs.
According to the Salt Lake Police Dept. Ortega was taking care of multiple children with her daughter at her home, as well as the victim who is under a year old. They said the operation wasn't licensed and used the injuries and arrest to remind parents to research daycares to make sure they are licensed.
During the interview, Ortega stated she would rather be deported than go to jail.
