Former Colerain star among three Illinois football players arrested
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Former Colerain High School football standout Howard Watkins was among three University of Illinois football players arrested early Wednesday morning on charges of home invasion and armed robbery.
Watkins is an offensive lineman who enrolled in January after completing his senior season at Colerain in 2016.
He was arrested and booked in Champaign County Jail along with fellow players Darta Lee and Zarrian Holcombe. They are expected to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Illini head coach Lovie Smith released a statement on the player arrests:
"Three members of the football program were involved in an incident early this morning. Darta Lee and Zarrian Holcombe were already suspended from team activities for violations of team rules, and will remain suspended. Howard Watkins has been suspended indefinitely from team activities.
"These allegations, if true, fail to live up to the standards we expect of our student-athletes. We continue to gather information and will take appropriate steps based upon what we learn."
