NKU's Poore to play in Columbus NCAA Golf Regional
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (WKRC) – Jacob Poore, Northern Kentucky University's first individual qualifier in the Division I era, learned Wednesday evening that he will play in the Columbus Regional of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships, set to be held at the Scarlet Course/OSU Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio, from May 14-16.
Poore dominated the Horizon League Men's Golf Championship, running away with the individual title by five strokes. His 212 total was the fifth-best three-round score in the 40-year history of the league championship. While Poore has come close with eight career top-10 finishes, this was his first collegiate victory.
The junior from Union, Kentucky (Ryle HS), has been playing exceptionally well this spring, carding all nine rounds at 2-over par or better. And, he saved his best for the Horizon League slate with each of the first two rounds at 2-under and even-par, respectively.
The Columbus Regional features 13 teams and 10 individuals. The top five teams, along with the best overall individual finisher not among those five teams, advance to the NCAA Championship in Stillwater, Oklahoma. In addition to the Columbus Regional, there are five other regionals, Raleigh, North Carolina, Kissimmee, Florida, Norman, Oklahoma, Bryan, Texas, and Stockton, California.
Poore continues Northern Kentucky's run of success in its first two seasons of active Division I status and postseason appearances. He joins Andrew Schille, who won the Horizon League Cross Country Championship last fall, as individual winners in league championships. And, the Norse men's basketball program has both a league tournament (2017) and regular-season title (2018), while the women's soccer program claimed the 2016 league tournament.
