Bearcats drop contest to nationally ranked Iowa State

Updated: Friday, November 22 2013, 08:41 AM EST

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team dropped a 78-42 decision against No. 22/16 Iowa State University on Thursday evening at Fifth Third Arena. Senior Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) scored 12 points for the third time this season while senior Jeanise Randolph (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional North) collected a game-high seven rebounds.

Cincinnati held close to Iowa State for the majority of the first half, but the Cyclones pulled away and used several second-half scoring runs to grow the lead. Poor second half shooting hindered the Bearcats and a plethora of fouls never allowed the home team to establish a rhythm in the half.

Cincinnati shot a total to 29.6 percent (16-of-54) from the floor. The Cyclones connected on 52.0 percent of their shots (26-of-50) and hit 50.0 percent from behind the arc (12-of-24).

Fouls also hurt UC in the second half. The Bearcats committed just three first-half fouls, but were called on five through the first four minutes and 21 seconds of the second half. They finished the game with 13 fouls called against them, allowing 14 ISU points from the charity stripe.

Alexis Durley (Houston, Texas/Andy Dekaney) hit a team-high two three-pointers in the game, a new career best for the sophomore. She finished with 10 points and had a double-digit point total for the second straight game.

Cincinnati finished with 29 rebounds. In addition to Randolph's seven, Durley and Hollins each finished with five rebounds in the game.

UC kept pace with the nationally ranked Cyclones to open the game with a three point shot from Durley and jumpers by both Randolph and Hollins to stay within 11-7 at the 15:18 mark. ISU then employed its first scoring run of the game, rattling off 10 unanswered points to jump ahead 21-7 with 12:03 remaining in the half.

The Bearcats looked to close the gap in the waning moments of the first half, scoring eight consecutive points over two minutes and 41 seconds to pull within 32-25. Four different players scored for Cincinnati as Randolph, Durley, Hollins and junior Alyesha Lovett (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X Shabazz) all tallied two points during the run.

The teams went into halftime with Iowa State leading 34-25.

The Cyclones opened up the second half in powerful fashion, running off a 6-2 run to jump ahead 40-27 with 16:44 left in the game. Long ISU scoring runs continued to plague the Bearcats as the visitors managed runs of 15-0 and 9-0 during the remainder of the game. The Cyclones used three minutes and 35 second of clock during the 15-0 run and one minute and 15 second during the 9-0 run, leaving Cincinnati with little time to produce points.

The Bearcats showed life with a three-point basket by Durley with 6:35 on the clock and a layup by Randolph in the next possession, but the damage had been done and UC could not close the gap. Iowa State added the final seven points for the final score of 78-42.

Cincinnati will be back in action at the Lady Rebel Round Up in Las Vegas, Nev., Nov. 30 - Dec. 1. The Bearcats will meet Charlotte at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sat., Nov. 30 and will play either Fordham or UNLV on Sun., Dec. 1.
