Deer Park fans welcome state champs back to school
DEER PARK, Ohio (WKRC) - It took a lot of hard work and dedication for the Deer Park Wildcats to bring home the school's first state basketball title.
Fans were at the school to congratulate the team as it arrived back at the high school, fresh off beating Columbus Africentric 67-57 at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
"It's one of the best feelings in the world," said Deer Park wing Damani McEntire. "Definitely something I'll remember for the rest of my life."
The game in Columbus kept the fans on the edge of their seats.
"It was an awesome game," said 1992 Deer Park grad Monica Brewer. "It was tight there for a little while. But they finished great like they always do."
Afterward, fans were lined up back at the school well in advance of the team bus arriving.
"I got a picture with (Deer Park guard) Mark Wise," said Monica Brewer's daughter, Kayla. "He's my favorite player so I really wanted to give a shoutout to him because I like Mark Wise. He's super nice and he's competitive. Even if they're losing, he still beats it and he knows that he can do it."
The players on the team were overwhelmed with the support of their classmates, family, and friends.
"It's amazing having all these people behind us," Wise said. "It's just an amazing feeling. We wanted to bring it back to Deer Park and that's what we did."
