Deer Park wins Ohio Division III basketball state championship
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKRC) - What a season it was for the Deer Park Wildcats.
A program that hasn't typically seen a lot of success is now bringing home a state championship, beating Columbus Africentric 67-57 at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
With the win, the Wildcats capped a perfect 29-0 season, becoming the first Division III team since 2000 to finish the year unblemished. The team that did it 18 years ago? It was Akron St. Vincent St. Mary, led by freshman LeBron James.
Africentric had a lead as big as 11 in the third quarter, but Deer Park rallied, outscoring Africentric 40-21 in the second half to secure its first state basketball title in school history.
Damani McEntire and Steven Gentry Jr. had 14 points each for Deer Park. Jalen Rose had 13 points, and Joseph Hocker had 10 points and 10 rebounds to round out the Wildcats in double figures.
