Former Buckeye Basketball Center Matt Marinchick is now working to make his niche in the country music scene (WSYX/WTTE)

COLUMBUS -- A trip down memory lane for the 6-foot-10 former center turned crooner if you will.

Matt Marinchick brought it full circle when he returned for the weekend for a charity gig at the Schottenstein Center.

Marinchick said he learned his work ethic during his college basketball playing days at Ohio State under head coach Thad Matta. "I was so grateful he gave me a chance," said Marinchick. "I came in for Terrance Dials, set screens and fouled people while he got a breather."

Marinchick has wrote hundreds of songs and has two albums with a third in the works. His latest single, "What gotcha don't get you no more."

The 35-year old singer said he went from "dabbling in dorm room guitar playing" to a full fledged transition to country music. He moved to Nashville six years ago. The native Texan grew up listening to Willie Nelson and Randy Travis. "I didn't think anyone else was good."

Marinchick returned home to play the Nashville Predators game Sunday. He'll play 32 gigs in the month of May.
