UC golfer Squires starts five shots off lead at NCAA Regional
West Lafayette, Indiana (WKRC) - University of Cincinnati sophomore Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) carded an even-par 72 to tie nine other players for 14th place Monday during opening-round play at the NCAA Tournament at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex (Kampen Course) in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Squires enters Tuesday’s second round five strokes behind tournament leader UNLV’s John Oda, who posted a 5-under 67. Squires will tee off Tuesday beginning at 10:12 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com. The three-day event concludes Wednesday.
Squires made the turn at 2-under par thanks in part to a trio of birdies on the front nine. After a bogie on the 10th hole, Squires carded another birdie on hole No. 11. However, bogeys on holes No. 14 and No. 16 led to him finishing the day at even par. He finished with four birdies and 10 par scores.
“Austin’s in a good mindset, a good place,” UC men’s golf coach Doug Martin said. “His ball striking was very good today he just left some putts short that led him to three-putt holes four, 10 and 16. Overall, he played a solid round.”
The West Lafayette regional is one of six 54-hole regional tournaments played across the country, May 15-17. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams are competing at Purdue. The low five teams and the low individual not from one of those five advancing teams will move on to the finals, May 26-31, at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
UNLV currently sits atop the team standings after the first round at 1-under 287. Illinois and New Mexico are one stroke back at even par 288. South Carolina (3-over 291) is fourth followed by Florida, Auburn and host Purdue, who are tied for fifth at 4-over 292.
