UC's Washington named Lute Olsen Award national player of the week
BOSTON (WKRC) - University of Cincinnati senior forward Kyle Washington has been named the Lute Olson award national player of the week.
The 6-foot-9 senior helped the Bearcats to a pair of wins last week. On Tuesday, Washington matched his season-high with 16 points against Mississippi State. He was 8 of 15 from the field and pulled down five rebounds. On Saturday, he had his best game on the season, with 19 points at UCLA. He was 7-of-11 from the field and added four rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
For the season, Washington is averaging 10.8 points and 4.9 rebounds. He ranks 12th in the American Athletic Conference in both field goal shooting percentage (.547 [47 of 86]) and blocks (1.0 per game) this season.
The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player who has played at least two seasons with his respective team. Freshmen and first-year transfers can be named to the All-America team, but are not eligible to receive the Player of the Year honors.
The award is named in honor of coaching great Lute Olson, who won 780 games in 34 seasons, 24 of which were spent at the University of Arizona. During that stretch he led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference titles, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, four Final Four appearances and a National Championship in 1997.
