NKU faces UK in their first NCAA tourney game

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - What an incredible experience for the Norse of Northern Kentucky University!

For the first time in school history, they were invited to “The Big Dance”, also known as the NCAA tournament.

As winners of the Horizon League Tournament, NKU received the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The only questions that remained were these: Where were they going and who were they playing?

On Sunday, they watched on campus and waited the selection show on Local 12.

The moment of truth came, and the Norse are staying close to home-- a first round matchup in Indianapolis against 2nd seeded Kentucky.

In just their first year of eligibility for the big dance, the Norse are thrilled about this opportunity.

The match-up is not a huge shock-- it was in several mock brackets. Though the Norse very well may have deserved a 14 seed, Brannen was not shocked either.

So here's a look at the match-ups: In the South Region, NKU and Kentucky go head-to-head on Friday night with the tip-off set for 9:40 p.m. in Indianapolis at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. That game will air on Local 12 WKRC.

The Bearcats will head out west for the second straight year, which is seemingly a tough draw for UC.

They're a 6 seed ,also in that South Region, and will play the winner of the Kansas State/Wake Forest play-in game on Friday at 7:27 p.m EST in Sacramento at the Golden One Center. You can watch that game on truTV.

With a victory, UC draws a likely second round matchup with 3 seed UCLA.

And Xavier, which the selection committee made sweat a little, was the last match-up announced in the field.

The Musketeers are an 11 seed in the West Region and they drew 6-seed Maryland.

Game time for that match is set for 6:50 p.m. on Thursday at Amway Center in Orlando and that will be shown on TNT.

The "First Four" games tip off Tuesday and Wednesday in Dayton with the rest of the tournament starting Thursday and Friday on CBS, TNT, TBS and TRUtv.
