Xavier's Trevon Bluiett named to the watch list for the Citizen Naismith trophy
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Xavier senior guard Trevon Bluiett has been named to the watch list for The Citizen Naismith Trophy, one of the major National Player of the Year awards. Today the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced 50 players to watch for the coveted honor. A list of the “midseason 30” team will be released on Feb. 14, 2018.
“There are tremendously talented candidates vying to win the 50th Citizen Naismith Trophy and that process starts today,” said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
In addition to the Naismith Award watch list, he is on the preseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which is given to the USBWA's National Player of the Year. He is also on watch lists for the Julius Erving Award and the Lute Olson Award, which is CollegeInsider.com's National Player of the Year award.
Bluiett's list of preseason All-America honors includes second team honors from Sporting News, NBC Sports and Athlon Sports and third team honors from ESPN, Street & Smith's, Blue Ribbon Basketball and College Sports Madness. Bluiett earned the 12th-most votes for Associated Press preseason All-American.
Xavier alumnus David West, who is now playing for the Golden State Warriors, earned Associated Press and USBWA National Player of the Year honors in 2003. West is Xavier's only national player of the year to date. Bluiett is also expected to be a top candidate for other National Player of the Year awards, including the John R. Wooden Award and the Naismith Award.
Bluiett, First Team All-BIG EAST and All-BIG EAST Tournament two years in a row, was selected to the 2017-18 preseason All-BIG EAST First Team. Bluiett was second in the BIG EAST Conference in scoring as a junior at 18.5 ppg. Bluiett was second on the team in rebounding at 5.7 rpg., which ranked 10th in the BIG EAST. He ranked third in the BIG EAST in 3-point field goals made at 2.5 per game, including a career-high and school-record tying nine at Cincinnati. The 2017 NCAA Tournament brought out the best of Bluiett, who was named to the five-member NCAA All-West Regional Team. Bluiett averaged 21.3 ppg. for Xavier's four games in the 2017 NCAA Tournament as he led XU to the Elite Eight.
Xavier opens the 2017-18 season tomorrow night vs. Morehead State at 7 p.m. at Cintas Center.
