Freestore Foodbank celebrates opening of duck season

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- It's duck season and time for the Freestore Foodbank's 20th Annual Rubber Duck Regatta!

The event takes place Sunday, August 31 during the P&G Riverfest and prior to the Cincinnati Bell/WEBN Fireworks.  That afternoon, as many as 200,000 ducks will swim in the Ohio River near the Serpentine Wall. The first prize winner will receive a 2014 Honda Accord Sport and possibly $1 million, if their duck is the "KEMBA Million Dollar Duck." The second prize winner will receive $100 from Kroger every week for a year ($5,200 total), and five additional winners will receive $500 cash from KEMBA Credit Union.

"Nearly 100,000 children in our area aren't always sure where they will get their next meal," said Rubber Duck Regatta Chairman Bob Edwards, who also founded the event. "The Freestore Foodbank's annual Rubber Duck Regatta is an opportunity for the local community to respond to the need of children and families facing hunger."

Individuals can buy ducks online at www.rubberduckregatta.org and by phone at (513) 929-DUCK (3825).  Individuals can also buy ducks at all KEMBA Credit Union locations and Kroger stores (at the check-out). Duck papers will also available at select Frisch's restaurants. Ducks will be sold until approximately 2:00 p.m. on August 31.

Pricing for ducks is:
*         $5 - One duck
*         $25 - "Big Quack" -  Five ducks, plus one free
*         $50 - "Quacker's Dozen" - Ten ducks, plus two free
*         $100 - "Flock of Ducks" - Twenty ducks, plus four free

Last year's Rubber Duck Regatta netted more than $875,000, the equivalent of 2.6 million meals for Greater Cincinnati's food insecure population. Since its inception in 1995, the fundraiser has raised $7.7 million to help alleviate hunger in the Tri-State.
