Health Alert: Breastfeeding Study

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- Information for new moms about breast feeding Tuesday, September 24th, 2013, a new report says proceed with caution when it comes to sleep time.  Medical Reporter Liz Bonis explains in Tuesday’s Health Alert.

In spite of the risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, a new study finds women who share a bed with their baby do breast feed longer than those who do not.

But that doesn't mean experts in the Journal Pediatrics recommend it.

Liz Bonis stopped at Children's Hospital Oak Campus Tuesday to tell you more.

Researchers found that when they looked at data from the Second Infant Practices Feeding Study, which followed pregnant women through the first year of a child’s life, that breastfeeding was the longest for moms who shared a bed with baby compared to those who did not.

In spite of this, it's important to note that it's not suggested because of accidents from rollovers and the risk for SIDS.  It's suggested instead, you share a room.  Have your baby in a bassinet or a bed nearby the parent but not actually in the bed so you lower the risk of serious accidents.
