Safe Sleep Campaign for Babies

CINCINNATI, Ohio (WKRC) -- Efforts to lower the rate of infant mortality in Cincinnati and Hamilton County focus on safe sleep.

A new campaign called Cradle Cincinnati in October of 2013, emphasizes the a-b-c's of safe sleep: alone, on your back and in a crib.

Local leaders partnered with doctors and hospitals to get out the message that infant deaths can be avoided if babies are not put to sleep on their stomachs or put in bed with their parents.  Among those supporting the effort was Doctor Sam Hae who lost his newborn son, Charlie, a few years ago.

Doctor Hanke and his wife formed a foundation in memory of Charlie.  They donated one thousand books produced by the foundation to local maternity wards.  The city and the city health department donated one thousand onesies to the hospitals reminding new parents to put babies to sleep, "This Side Up."
