Health Alert: Pets Good for Children

COLLEGE HILL, Ohio (Liz Bonis) -- A report from Berkley Wellness experts says there may be big benefits to introducing your child to a pet at an early age.

Medical reporter Liz Bonis explains why in Mondays Health Alert.

A report found that pets are good for all of us but especially children.  Local 12 stopped out at Children's Hospital on the College Hill campus to tell you more about it.

They do pet therapy here and researchers in this study found pets are good for kids because they lend to companionship, but also teach about the importance of taking care of another creature.  They also found lower health risks, with dogs or cats or other pets, they found kids who had pets over a lifetime had lower rates of allergies, less asthma, and had stronger immune systems.

They also found many had fewer respiratory infections and fewer ear infections.

Now if you are thinking of introducing your pets to your children at a young age talk to your pediatrician.  But if you do want to there are a number of healthy ways to do this, and the SPCA can help you with this idea as well.
