Health Alert: Find out Causes of Concussions
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- You likely know that concussions are from a blow to the head, but you may not realize that different kinds of concussions, can lead to different kinds of outcomes.
We stopped at the Group Health Offices for TriHealth to tell you more about this research. It is published in the Journal of Neurotrama.
Researchers in this study say that many concussions are the result of either a mechanical blow to the head, such as a car accident, or a sports injury. But up to 50 to 80 percent of military personnel suffer concussions by intense pressure waves that come from something such as an improvised explosive device.
In this study researchers found a difference in brain activity and behavior depending on the cause of the concussion. Researchers say finding out more about the cause could lead to better treatments. They conducted different tests, including MRI's to find this out.
They discovered blast related concussion cause a different pattern of brain activity compared to those that are mechanical. Experts say it's important to note these differences because some concussions appear to cause different behavior. Some may cause an increase in addictive habits such as gambling, others may show up more with anger concerns.
Knowing a cause could put someone on a path not only to proper treatment, but in healthy healing for life.
