Health Alert: Blood Pressure and Flaxseed

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- The newer guidelines for blood pressure suggest you keep blood pressure down to no higher than about 120/ 80 to lower long term heart risks.

If you have already talked to your doctor about medications and lifestyle changes to do this you may also want to ask about one other thing: adding flaxseed to your diet.  We stopped out at TriHealth's Good Samaritan Western Ridge to tell you more about it.

It is published in the Journal Hypertension.  Researchers found that those who had peripheral arterial disease, or PAD,who ate 30 grams of flaxseed a day were able to drop blood pressure ten to 15 points.  That can make a significant difference in heart disease risk.

Flaxseed is best when ground. You can get it at any health food area or store.  You may want to just add a couple tablespoons a day to your diet.
