Health Alert: Apple a day

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- Grabbing an apple a day could help your body in a really big way!

We often think of an apple a day as a great thing to add your kids' lunch each day.  Now this new report found adults may get even bigger benefits from eating apples.  We stopped out at the Clovernook Country Club Thursday to tell you more about this research.

I am actually here for a special luncheon which honors the volunteers from the new Mercy Health West Hospital and to speak to the Women's Auxiliary Group.

But this study found that those who eat just one apple a day may prevent or delay death from heart attack or stroke.  According to a new study in The British Medical Journal, researchers found this benefit to be true in all ages but especially in those age 50.  What it appears the apples do is work like medicine in the body.

That means that usually you have to take what's called a "statin" to reduce bad cholesterol but apples appear to work in a similar way in the body by combining with the bad cholesterol to lower it and eventually get it out of the body.

It is important to note that apples might lead to fewer side effects than some medications people use, but it's not enough to stop taking medication and start eating apples.  If you have a high risk already for a heart attack you may do best to get the benefits of both.
