Ask the Expert: How to shape up with a walking plan

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A local viewer wants to know what's the best way to shape up and slim down with a walking program?

Whether you want to step it up outside or feel like adding in a few steps inside the gym, personal fitness trainer Don Gallucci says walking  may give  some people an advantage over running.

Gallucci of TriHealth said, "Running may be detrimental, walking may be beneficial."

It can be detrimental, for example, to people with bad knees.  For Mike Bochmovich, running really wasn't an option after knee surgery.  He's made great progress in recovery with a walking and strength training program.

Mike Bochmovich said, "The main thing is just moving better and being able to lift, do the things I didn't think I was gonna be able to do after my knee replacement."

If you are about 3 to four miles per hour, which is a 20 minute or 15 minute mile, those calorie expenditures are about equal.  Trainer Don says you need to likely go a little faster or a little longer walking compared to running to get the same benefits.  He suggests 30 to 45 minutes most days of the week.
 
Don't underestimate how much both can pick up your spirits!  As for dropping pounds, walking can do that too.  Mike has dropped about twenty so far.

He said, "It's taken me about a year and a half, that's the way I want to do it."
