Simple Steps Get You Well At Work

CINCINNATI: (Liz Bonis) Mark your calendar and head to Fountain Square for Employee Health and Fitness Day next week. Dozens of companies are teaming up to help you get well at work.

Medical Reporter Liz Bonis shares some of what they are doing for their own employees in today's Medical Edge.
Cathy Koop says staying in shape isn't easy these days when you spend a lot of time at work.

Cathy Koop, Employee:
"You always have one meeting or the next, and someone's always coming up to you and before you know it, it's 5:30."

So, she is one of many taking advantage of any opportunity to fit in fitness at the office. She'll hop on a desk treadmill at a friends company or take a walk outside on a lunch hour. Good health habits, she found, can be contagious.

"It definitely becomes contagious. I have had people ask to join my walks with me."

If you think about it, it just makes sense. The average person spends eight to ten hours a day on the job, and quite often you spend six of that sitting. So, if you want to make some changes, you obviously have to make them in what you are eating during that time, and in your activity levels."

And those activity levels will change, Leah Boggs says, if you realize wellness is not just, not being sick.

Leah Boggs, Wellness Coordinator:

"When I think of wellness, I think of the whole person, and that has to do with how we feel from day to day."

So, here's a couple things Cheryl Hardin did at this busy law firm where she works to help friends and co-workers get well at work.  She says you could do these, too:

She started "Wellness Wednesdays" one day a week where people bring in healthier snack foods.

She also got a yoga instructor to come in those days and do a lunch hour workout. It's cheap, if people chip in.

Cheryl Hardin, Director of Operations:
"It's the first time I tried yoga, and I am addicted, I love it."

And finally, she worked with the Lifespan fitness consultant to get the company to invest in two of these work-desk treadmills, which have been a huge success.

Cheryl Hardin, Employee:
"And actually, some days you hear, it's like two kids, you've had it , now it's my turn, you've had it enough, let me have a turn on it."

Guess we all are always kids at heart, but at least that heart is healthy.
Cincinnati Employee Health and Wellness Day is Thursday, September 19th beginning at 11:30 am. It is free.
