Woman Treated for Severe Incontinence
WEST CHESTER, Ohio (WKRC) -- After years of being stuck at home, a woman from Georgetown, Ohio is saying a big thank you to doctors at UC Health Urology in West Chester. She says they made all the difference in getting her out and about once again. Medical reporter Liz Bonis explains how in our Medical Edge.
Linda Lykins says for about five years, she had such severe urinary incontinence that she was afraid to go just about anywhere, "I was afraid to go to church, I was afraid to go shopping."
So she made an appointment with Doctor Ayman Mahdy. He is a specialist in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. He performed a number of tests and discovered she did have treatment options for a bladder that was simply too small.
Eventually she chose a procedure that not too many people need, but she said
it made all the difference for her, it's actually given her back, her whole life. Doctor Maddy refers to that procedure as "what we call the last resort surgery, when we do some sort of pelvic reconstruction, major bladder reconstruction".
He not only had to rebuild part of it, he had to close off the opening so Linda would have to use a tiny tube or catheter to empty her bladder. For Linda, "it changed my whole life, I could go anywhere I wanted to without taking clothes, wearing pads, and then just going all over the floor, no matter how many you had on."
Linda shares her story now because others think you simply have to live this way, "and this message is for all age groups, if you are 80 or 90 you still have to live with it, that's not true."
She has talked about her treatment to many she says for very personal problem, people don't talk about, "because it helps me so much, it made my esteem of myself better, and I wanted everybody to feel that way, I tell everybody about it, I could almost cry right now".
