Medical Edge: Donate Blood on January 10th

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- There is a blood drive this Friday, January 10th, 2014, to help fight a life threatening condition that can happen in pregnancy.

Little baby Jackson is now nearly two years old -- but ask his parents, Sarah and Craig Spite, what they remember about the day he was born -- and they'll tell you they remember everything.

The waiting actually began when Sarah went into the hospital after multiple bleeding episodes early in pregnancy

"While I was there they did lots of ultrasounds and they began to suspect that i had placenta accreta," said Sarah.

Placenta Accreta can cause severe bleeding in delivery and can be life threatening to both mother and child.

"I think one in about 2500 women in pregnancy have it, and there's not much you can do to prevent it, and there's not much you can do once it occurs to treat it," said Mark Folino of Hoxworth.

Jackson was delivered through emergency c- section at 32 weeks

"It was a point where I was going to have a family of four, or three, or just two, said Craig.

Sarah now says her result was a good one -- due to multiple transfusions which were available in the operating room.

"In that condition you could use hundreds of units of blood, in a heartbeat," said Folino

"I was actually told by my surgeon that... if they hadn't been prepared, that I probably wouldn't have been here," said Sarah.

She credits her success now to donors that she knows she will never meet. She said there was quite a list of blood and blood products she needed that likely saved her life, and the life of her child.

Sarah is sharing Jackson's story this week because all over the country there are national accreta blood drives

"We need people to come in and support that so we can have blood on the shelves when we need it," said Folino.

There are drives at all Hoxworth Blood Centers this Friday, January 10th, in the Tri-State, as well as at the Christ Hospital, Trihealth's Bethesda North Hospital, and St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood.
