Medical Edge: Night in White raising money for nursing scholarships
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- You're invited to wear white before Easter this year!
Cincy Chic hosts the fifth annual "Night in White" fashion fundraiser Friday, April 11th, 2014, to raise money for a nursing scholarship program at Good Samaritan Hospital. It was started by a local family.
Steve Smith still remembers the call for what was expected to be a normal healthy family addition a few years ago.
Smith said, "When I got up to the hospital with my wife, we found out that things weren't quite as normal as we had hoped they would be."
In fact, they weren't normal at all. When it came to his grandson, also named Stephen, doctors could only say, "He's breathing, but we are not getting any movement and what not, so for exactly eight days and one hour he was in the NICU."
Eight days and one hour, that's was all little Stephen survived. His memory though lives on through a program and nursing scholarship his family launched called the Eight Days and One Hour Foundation. The program was started to give back to those who had given so much to help Stephen in the fight of his life. They wanted to honor nurses and more importantly support their training.
"When things go well, you don't notice the nurses in a hospital. When things go poorly you begin to really realize the kindness the care and the compassion that only they can really provide," Smith said.
So the Eight Days and One Hour Foundation is designed to help nurses pay for their education. They do that by raising money through special events.
Amy Scalia, the event coordinator, tells us, "I hope the message we send is to support the nursing profession, because it's really a lot of unsung heroes because they are on the front lines. They are helping families like Stephens get through the most difficult time of their lives."
Smith said, "And as sad as we were that our grandson had passed away, we believe he had a real purpose and his purpose was to illuminate for us what these young men and young women go through."
Stephen Smith says every life has lasting value. His grandson Stephen is proof that eight days and one hour can still help change the world.
The "Night in White" event is at Obscura in downtown Cincinnati, Friday at 7 p.m. For details CLICK HERE.
