Trial Begins for Teen Charged in Murder of Step-Brother
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The trial of a Louisville teen charged in the slaying of his step-brother has begun.
The Courier-Journal reports prosecutor Erin White said in opening statements on Wednesday that 17-year-old Joshua Young was involved in the 2011 fatal beating of 14-year-old Trey Zwicker.
Defense attorney Pete Schuler denied that claim and said Young's father and Zwicker's stepfather, Joshua Gouker, committed the "horrible murder" by himself.
Gouker pleaded guilty to murder and other charges in Jefferson Circuit Court and has been sentenced to life in prison.
White said Gouker would testify during the trial as would inmates who say he has told them he put Young up to the killing.
Young is charged with complicity to murder.
Gouker has said he beat the teen to death in a fit of rage.
