Former Coach Faces Sex abuse Charge

In a Covington courtroom this afternoon, a part- time volunteer football coach at Holy Cross sat quietly as a police detective detailed the coach's sexual relationship with a 16 year old female student.
That relationship continued to be documented over the internet up until August 3rd, as Thomas Hansman and the girl communicated thousands of times over Facebook.

As Local 12 News Reporter Rich Jaffe shows us, it's those details in black and white that have built a case Hansman can't walk away from.

For a football coach, Thomas Hansman's not having a very good season. He's admitted to a sexual relationship with a 16 year old high school girl.
When word got out about his charges, horseshoe casino fired him.

His attorney had hoped to simply get the case waived to a grand jury to avoid spilling the details in open court, but Judge Ken Easterling wouldn't buy it saying...

"The citizens of this county have a right to know what's going on in this community and i in order to ensure the protection issue by way of bond are going to have a hearing so have a seat."

Hansman was a volunteer part time coach for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in the Holy Cross program. The sixteen year old girl is a student at Holy Cross, but not one of his students.
The girl and her parents contacted a local attorney about the relationship on August 21st. That attorney reached out to Covington police and Hansman was quickly arrested after admitting to the relationship.

Detective Nick Klaiss says "I recovered over 2000 text message from the victims Facebook account and there are multiple indicating his desire to have sexual encounters with the victim."

According to the detective on the case the on line communication between the coach and the student went on and on and on but it took a little bit of a break over the summer. It started up again just a few weeks ago.
Just the recent messages took up 7 or 8 pages. The last one was August 3rd.

"It says yeah that's why i've been so removed. I find you attractive and sexy and love to be the one you lose it to, referencing her virginity, but it's hard for me. She responded back on August 3rd. Yeah you're single. There's nothing wrong with it. you'll find someone sooner or later." read detective Klaiss.

Hansman's charged with 1st degree sexual abuse and prohibited use of electronic communication to procure a minor for a sex offense. More charges are possible when the case goes to the grand jury.
Holy Cross terminated Hansman as soon as they became aware of the allegations. He remains free tonight on a five thousand dollar bond.
